Summer-Fall Trophy – Arts on Parade – Hot Debate of Touts

*The Bodrum Offshore Sailing Club (BAYK) begins the Summer-Fall Trophy Race Series with the “Cabotage Cup” races on 28-29 June. Cabotage translates into ‘coasting’, but the English word does not carry the emotional content that carried over into Turkish from the French – this cup race commemorates the reclaiming of sovereign coastal shipping rights by the Turkish Republic with the abolishment of special privileges known as ‘capitulations’ which, among other concessions, granted to foreign powers the rights to conduct coastal shipping. The photo here is from the Winter Trophy series but it does illustrate how exciting and picturesque these events are. Join if you can! **Casa Dell’Arte in Torba will host a ‘first’ for the Bodrum peninsula, an exhibit of a painting by the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero who was the subject of a recent BBCWorld TV program. This exhibit, opening on 28 June, also serves to inaugurate a new Casa Dell’Arte enterprise, an Arts Village with workshops conducted by artists whose works adorn the various rooms of this truly unique establishment. Also opening the same day is a painting exhibition in the Casa Dell’Arte Art Gallery. That same day the Rixos Hotel hosts an electronic music performance by Hande Yener, a name very familiar to connoisseurs of this genre. Paintings by Saim Dursun and Pinar Yegenaga still to be seen at Divan Palmira.

***The debate over the pros and cons of touts continues. At a meeting called by the Bitez Municipality some eatery owners touted the touts as necessary and valuable ‘tools’ of business, while others wanted them banned because their frequent tenacity and aggressiveness are distasteful to many tourists. The meeting ended in a stalemate so if you want to influence the final decision we suggest you send an e-mail to Bitez Municipality. E-address: bitezbelediyesi@gmail.com; you could also express your opinion on this by sending a letter to the editor of Bodrum Observer at contact@bodrumobserver.com – this popular local publication is currently ‘on hold’ but will be coming out very soon.
