We intend to repeat this commemoration of Herodotus in the country where he was born every year and to elevate these occasions to the point where visitors from other countries will also be interested over time.

All Bodrum citizens are invited to embrace and participate in the events that would represent Bodrum as the birthplace of Herodotus, the Father of History, in the eyes of the entire world.

THE PHILOSOPHICAL and CULTURAL STRUCTURES OF THE HERODOTUS PERIOD
31st October 2022, at 14.00, Bodrum Chamber of Commerce

Who was our fellow townsman Herodotus? What was his scientific and philosophical background during his lifetime? Who were the contributors to the world of philosophy during his time in ancient Athens? What were the sources of information in the ancient Egyptian, Scythian and Persian worlds? What kind of philosophical and worldly perspectives did this whole environment create? What was the main worldview at that time? We will examine all these issues together with Reyhan Destan, a researcher in the fields of history and archeology.

REYHAN DESTAN (1945, Lüleburgaz)
Graduate from the Naval Academy and the PG University of California, retired naval officer Reyhan Destan has certificates in Defense and Strategic Logistics Systems, Ancient Anatolian cities and Historical Geography. Destan has written articles on historical trade routes, the silk road and the OBOR Project. He is interested in history, medicinal plants and petrology. As a book lover, his greatest pleasure is to share what he knows and what he has learned with his surroundings. He is preparing his book “Deep Anatolia” for publication and dreams of establishing a “futurism” association in Bodrum.

THE LIFE AND TRAVELS OF HERODOTUS
Born in the city of Halicarnassus in Caria in 484 BC, Herodotus, son of Lykses of Caria, is known as the “Father of History”. He is the oldest historian in the true sense of the word, known with his magnificient work “History of Herodotus”. In his work, he tells the true history of the ancient world and is therefore considered to be the father of history. Archaeologist Mehmet Çuhadar will provide information about the lesser-known life of Herodotus, as well as details about his travels in the ancient world. Together with Herodotus, we will visit the land of the Scythians, the Black Sea, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Anatolia.

MEHMET ÇUHADAR (1949, Kahramanmaraş)
Mehmet Çuhadar graduated from Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography, Classical Archeology Department and served in Konya Archeology Museum and Bodrum Underwater Archeology Museum. He participated in archaeological excavations in the Muğla region since his student years and also worked as a government representative on behalf of the Ministry of Culture in a number of foreign-led excavations. Mehmet Çuhadar gave numerous conferences on Turkey’s Cultural Heritage, Faith Tourism in Turkey, Underwater Archeology in Bodrum, Caria Culture, Herodotus and Tourism. In 1997 Çuhadar received from the Association of Tourism Writers “The Best Guide” award for his services in the industry. He also wrote books on Cappadocia Regions and published maps highlighting Turkey’s historical, archaeological and cultural values.

THE CITY WALLS OF HALICARNASSUS

Built around 2400 years ago, the walls of Halicarnassus are the longest surviving walls from ancient Caria. Built by the Satrap King Mausolos, they have survived nature’s and man’s destruction for 24 centuries. Today they embrace Bodrum all around the peninsula. The documentary, “The Walls of Halicarnassus”, was prepared by Cana Üngün – Mehmet Uyargil and Reyhan Destan in 4 months. It will be presented for the first time during this festivity week. The presentation will take place inside the church.

CANA ÜNGÜN
After studying French Language and Literature in Istanbul, Cana üngün returned to Bodrum and driven by her love for the art of photography she studied photography and cameramanship. Üngün, who had been taking photographs for ten years, partnered with Mehmet Uyargil to produce documentary films such as “Bodrumun Suskun Çanları (The Silent Bells of Bodrum) in 2018 and “Ege de bir Tahtacı köyü Meyistan” (Meyistan a woodcutter village in the Aegean) in 2021.

MEHMET UYARGIL (1955, Istanbul)
Mehmet Uyargil, who has been taking photographs for 40 years, lived for many years in Germany, where he went for higher education. Uyargil, who has been living in Bodrum since 2007, is engaged in research on the history of Bodrum and he continues to shoot documentaries.

Herodot 3rd Age Academy Documentary Photography Workshop
31 October-14 November 2022, Mausolos Exhibition Hall

The exhibition is organized by (Herodotus 3rd Age Academy) the H3A Documentary Photography Workshop Group, inspired by the “History of Herodotus”. It focuses on the ancient cities of Caria mentioned in his book. In the exhibition, we will tour the cities of Caria together with the writings of Herodotus. The Carian cities mentioned in the “History” are as follows: Alabanda, Euromos, Halicarnassus, Idrias, Kaunos, Knidos, Miletos, Mylasa, Myndos, Pedasos, Priene. In addition to these cities, Laubranda ve Didyma sanctuaries also will be presented in the exhibition.

FOOD, PLANTS AND WELLBEING IDEAS IN HERODOTUS’ ‘HISTORY’

Herodotus almost “photographed” the daily lives of people in 5 BC, so that “the deeds of human beings will not be forgotten in time”. As described in his work, these ancient people lived in harmony with nature and used what it offered them with great wisdom and confidence. Some of their ancient ways of life, their eating-drinking habits, their cultivation of the land, and their approaches to health and cleanliness are known and still applied today . However, Sevinç Ulucanlar will draw our attention to their “unknown” ways of life which will surely surprise us !

SEVİNÇ ULUCANLAR (1955, Ankara)
Sevinç Ulucanlar graduated from Boğaziçi University, English Language and Literature Department, and completed her Master’s degree at Southampton University Department of Sociology in the field of Social Work and Social Administration. Between 1980 – 1995 she worked as a Turkish teacher in private schools in Switzerland. During these years, she also organized cultural school trips to Turkey.
She opened her own restaurant “Soğan Sarımsak” (Onion Garlic) in Gümüşlük in 2002 and served as its chef for 18 years. Ulucanlar has also been giving Turkish cuisine courses to foreigners in Switzerland, England and Bodrum since 1994.

FOODS OF THE ANTIQUE PERIOD

What do we know about the “gastronomy” of ancient people? What did they use to eat in this geography? What did this land offer them as food? How and what did they cook? What were their eating habits?
Pelin Dumanlı, an expert in the history of food, will try to answer these questions together with a selection of “antique” recipes. We hope that this event will open a new era in Bodrum’s cultural life by bringing forward the relationship between ancient times and today’s gastronomy.

PELIN DUMANLI (1988, Istanbul)
Pelin graduated from Yeditepe University Gastronomy and Culinary Arts Department and got her master’s degree from Bilgi University, Department of Cultural Studies. During her undergraduate and graduate education, she performed research and active work in the meat, offal, butchery and organic food sectors. She pursued her professional life as kitchen and banquet coordinator in Otto Istanbul and as the responsible coordinator of the TV show “Miracle flavors in Refika’s Kitchen”.
She moved from Istanbul to Bodrum in 2012 where she established Foodrum Culinary Park to provide gastronomy trainings for professionals and amateurs. In 2017 she served as the Coordinator of the Gastronomy Academy at Istanbul Aydın University where she is still working as lecturer in Gastronomy, Culinary Arts and Cookery departments. She also teaches and conducts workshops in various secondary schools. Besides her book “Sakatat” (Offal) she continues her studies on culinary culture in the field of food culture.

THE CITY WALLS OF HALICARNASSUS

At the beginning of the 4th century, when Mausolos decided to move his capital from Mylasa to Halicarnassus, his first thought was to protect his city with a perfectly strong wall. The 7.5 km long walls of the city have been standing like immortal soldiers for 2500 years. Along the walls are 4 castles, 2 bastions and 40 towers. This year, Reyhan Destan is starting the first 2 stages (out of the planned 5 stages) of the city wall tours. We will explore the walls with him for 2 days.

The Herodotus 3rd Age Academy Digi Art group, led by Aslıhan Sander Atasi, prepared creative images about Herodotus under two different themes: Best Quotations from Herodotus, Herodotus and His Fellow Townsmen.

Quotations of Herodotus are translated by Sonmez Taner. Images can be seen on billboards throughout the week.

WORKSHOP

INTERNATIONAL BODRUM HERODOTUS WORKSHOP
02-04 November 2022 at 10.00-16.00, Herodot Cultural Center

The International Bodrum Herodotus Workshop, which takes place under the “Herodotos of Halikarnassos Week” events, will be held between 02-04 November at the Herodotus Cultural Center in Bodrum and will be hosted by Bodrum Municipality. 23 participants from 8 different countries will discuss Herodotus and his book Histories.

The academic program of the workshop was carried out by Istanbul University Faculty of Letters Department of Ancient History lecturer Prof.Dr. Mustafa Hamdi Sayar. He is also head of the Institute of South East European Studies at the Faculty of Letters in the same university and a member of the Turkish Historical Society Scientific Committee Member.
