The Gumusluk International Classical Music Festival – 5th of July and 7th of September

The Gümüşlük International Classical Music Festival has been held annually  since 2004, in Gümüşlük, which is a small fishing town in Bodrum famous for its historical antiquities. This year the festival meets its audience for the ninth time between the 5th of July and 7th of September.
One of the world’s and Turkey’s longest running festivals, Gümüşlük International Classical Music Festival will host 19 concerts this year over a period of two months.  The festival is held in Eklisia , a  400 year old chapel which has a very special acoustic.

The festival was founded by pianist Eren Levendoğlu as its Artistic Director, State Artist and pianist Gülsin Onay as the Artistic Advisor, and the Chairman of Gümüşlük Culture and Arts Association Mesut Pekergin. The organisation, which is a non-profit organisation is run by a team of 8 volunteers.

The festival provides an opportunity to hear the leading classical musicians of our country and abroad in the unparalled setting of Gümüşlük. Classical music lovers will be able to  watch piano virtuosos such as Gülsin Onay, Russian-born Lilya Zilberstein, Lithuanian Muza Rubakycke, English Jonathan Plowright, and the Dutch Karst de Jong. A familiar face to the festival, cellist Alexander Baillie (Scotland) and  cellist Çağ Erçağ, one of the instruments which best suits the acoustics of Eklisia;  Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, the Hacettepe Symphony Orchestra, Erol Erdinç Jazz Quartet and the Bremenhaven Stadttheater ballet will also be in the programme.

During the festival, artists who are performing will at the same time give masterclasses for young musicians at the Eklisia Summer Music Academy (ESMA).  ESMA is an  unforgettable experience for young musicians, who have the opportunity to participate in masterclasses with the festival artists, and as well perform in concerts of their own. Within the scope of the festival,  around 300 young musicians participating in the masterclasses of worldwide renowned virtuosos have received their ESMA certificates in the fields of piano, violin, cello, flute, harp, conducting, vocal and guitar. Since its inception,  9 students who have participated are studying music full-time with the artists they have met at ESMA.

The festival adds another first to its programme this year with the organisation of the A.A. Saygun Bodrum Piano Competition. In the competition finals which will be held with the support of the Municipality of Bodrum between 20th and 24th of July jury members will include Gülsin Onay, Lilya Zilberstein, Karst de Jong, İbrahim Yazıcı, Julian Gorus and Eren Levendoğlu. All rounds of the competition will be open to the public.
The festival organisers are very excited at the implementation of yet another social responsibility aspect to the festival. At the same time as providing financial and professional support  to young musicians, the competition will promote and nurture the  name of Ahmet Adnan Saygun who is one of the most important composers in the history of the Turkish Republic. The competition is open to all talented young musicians from all over the world.  The purpose of the competition  is to familiarise young pianists with Saygun’s unique compositions and keep his music alive in the younger generations.

The festival is organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Bodrum Chamber of Commerce, Gümüşlük and Bodrum Municipalities, as well as the private sector.
