What
is a carpet worthy of a Sheik like, you may ask. For
one, it’s made from the wool of 3000 sheep and
with a claim to being the world’s largest carpet
made all in one piece, measuring 8.70 meters in width
and 19.20 meters in length (28.54 ft. x 63 ft.). It
was made wool-on-wool, with 30% mohair; the quality
is given as 30 x 36.
The wool of the 3000 sheep was hand-spun, dyed with
natural vegetable dyes and then it was sent for quality
control test to the United States where it received
the stamp of approval. The carpet was woven by 14 weavers
under the control and guidance of an instructor in the
small town of Dikilitas in the province of Nigde. When
completed, the carpet weighed in at 900 kilograms (approx.
1985 lbs.) and it took the efforts of 40-45 people to
load it on board a TIR truck for transport to Bodrum
where it was delivered to a private airplane which flew
with it to Kuwait. Yes, the proud new owner who ordered
this carpet is really a Sheik, Sheik Nasir El Sabah
of Kuwait who had ordered a total of 74 carpets of which
this was the largest.
So what does this story have to do with Bodrum? Just
stop by at Orhan’s Place at No. 40/B Neyzen Tevfik
Street and ask; they can tell you a whole lot more because
they are the ones who received and fulfilled the Sheik’s
order.
